Navistar Defense sent one of its Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) MaxxPro vehicles to MATS. Vehicles like this were rushed into production during the Iraqi insurgency to help protect Marines and Soldiers from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Security guards were in place to prevent photography of some sensitive areas and components of the vehicle, which was also locked.
Well-suited to duty in Iraq where good roads and urban combat areas provided relatively easy passage, many MRAPs in Afghanistan are being outfitted with independent suspensions and other modifications so the massive vehicles can function better in that country's mountainous terrain and rough, often nonexistent roads.
Navistar recently introduced an ambulance variant of its Dash MRAP model, as well as a retrofit kit to convert existing Dash models into ambulances for safer and faster retrieval of wounded warriors.
